I've never heard of animals being poisoned by them-isn't it only the root that is poisonous?
I haven't noticed any in our woods, but my aunt, who lives a half mile away, has hundreds of them. She doesn't have any animals, so maybe they do eat them. I don't know....

They are not THAT poisonous and don't emit nuclear radiation. Most of your animals probably woud'nt find them platable and won't eat them. Cattle, I don't know. People eat the fruits when ripe - otherwise you get a case of the runs pretty quick. There are plenty of otherthings in the woods that are equally as poisonous.

They taste pretty good when ripe! Look like what my grandmother used to call her "Golden Transparent" apples and really did taste like them...used to sit in the apple tree and eat up a storm! :) You can make jelly from Mayapples, too.
