At what stage does a manure crop do it's nitrogen fixing? Does lupin have to flower or can I dig it in at any stage. Also mustard and oats.It is late winter here in NZ and lupins have been in since Autumn and are 6 inches tall, oats 8 inches and mustard 3 inches. I will want to plant out in the area in the late Spring.

Neither mustard nor oats "fix" nitrogen. I believe lupine does but am not completely sure. Mustard and oats ARE very good cover crops because of their ability to grow well when little else is.
