My lilac bushes are tall with folage and flowers on the top....but not much in the middle but bare wood. Also I have one bush that has beautiful folage...but has never bloomed. It is about 3 years old. Do I need to cut these shrubs back and fertilize to make them full? They are nearly finished blooming...so guess that is the time to prune...if that is what they need.

I always prune 1/3 out of my bush every year...I believe next year's blooms are on wood that will grow this year. So. yes, you need to prune them as soon as they are done blooming. I don't have any advice about your young bush. Anyone else?
