Just a note to mention that this past Sunday, a local church in our county arrived at their building to discover it was very warm.

Sombody walked around the back and discovered that the central air unit had been cut free from the building and dragged back into the woods where it was dismantled and all of the copper/stainless/aluminum had been removed. Only the cover was left and I guess that was so that the parts wouldn't be associated with a working unit when the parts were sold for scrap.

If your church or home is in a rural area, ya may want to chain a biting dog up to the External unit...

Sheesh! The things people think of to steal...If they would work as hard at a JOB as they do at their THIEVING, they would have plenty of money...

That is a huge problem around here. My DH is meeting with a guy in Michigan to become a distributor for a special (patent-pending) alarm system for just this problem.
A church in another state had their units stolen, and the insurance covered the loss, but said the church had to do something to protect the unit. So, they had a cage built and next time it was stolen as well as the unit. Now they have this alarm system installed.
The scrap dealers around here are supposed to be requiring proper documentation before purchasing the metals, but there will always be a black market.
Our local VFW hall has had their units stolen as well.

Just isn't right.

You would think a church would be the last place a thief would hit. Its a shame, a short while back the insurance co told my church it must lock the doors between services. Of all places. You are right, they should work a job for the money, But how many crackheads and meth users you know, can hold down a job? Thanks for the warning though. :)

Most likely it is methamphetamine addicts stealing it and selling it for drug money. I've heard lots of stories like that for about the last year. It's a big problem for new construction homes when the house is semi-finished but not securely locked yet.
