i went outside and i dont seem to have any dandelion flowers yet. just the greens , but i did grab one and a some grass, she took a dand. leaf from me , and a few blades of grass , so at least she ate that. im pretty sure i got some wild violet growing in my yard, but it being dark out, i wont be able to find the flowers, ill have to get those tomorrow morning when i take care of my chickens.

i wont give her too much , just a tiny bit , cause i dont want her bloated , then i would be fighting 2 problems instead of just the one.. seems like for my buck , day 4 after i gave him meds then the dandelion leaf , he pooped later that evening .

closest krogers to me is about an hour and a half away sadly .. other stores might have the pumpkin seeds , but i wont be venturing to the store for quite a while , and hopefully by then , she will feel better.

Target used to carry pepitas, don't know if they still do. Meijer and Walmart do not carry them. Don't make a special trip just for pumpkin seeds.
But if you like butternut or acorn squash, you could buy one of those and give her the seeds after you have cleaned the squash. Rabbits like cooked squash. Some people have gotten their rabbits to eat raw squash but mine never ate it that way.
Don't make a special trip for squash, just something to consider next time you go to the store.

lol closest target to me is 3 hours away .. oooh country life. i been keeping a close eye on her , shes nibbling on a little hay today , but still avoiding her waterbottle . so i gave her a bowl of water, shes been drinking from that.

if i brought dandelion leaves inside and sat them out to dry, would that be ok to let her nibble on here and there ? that way its not "green" anymore ? i gave her a dry one today , and she seemed to like it just as much as she did when i freshly picked it.

Yes, you can give her unlimited dry dandelion leaves. Just don't try drying the flowers, that is a mess! You can dry grass and violet leaves too, they seem to like those more than regular hay.

If you don't mind me asking, in which corner of the state are you located? The southeast is the only part I know of that is that far from a Target or Kroger. But that is the most beautiful part of the state.

Just had another thought, do you have any mulberry trees? The tender bark on those thin young branches is a really good rabbit treat.

i was hoping i could use my lawn clipping as rabbit fodder in the summer, makes it a little cheaper , thats good to know. yay !

i live in southeast. im about eeeh .. 50 minutes from the WV border. and both 2ish hours away from Columbus or Cleveland . if that gives you an idea where im situated. there really isnt much around store wise unless i venture. theres probably a hidden krogers around here somewhere, but its not near where i normally go get my shopping done.

no mulberry trees near me, got plenty of apple trees and peach trees , mulberry just dont like my property much.

wont do the peach then, got plenty of maple around.

its not too bad living here , as long as i make it a whole day to do my running around. and stock up , but with whats going on right now .. im kinda limited when i can go , and what i can get... i was one of those people who got laid off from work... boss told me to apply for unemployment till things are back to normal and we can work again , but still waiting on that payment.. so very limited funds right now , trying to take care of these sick animals, and healthy animals... go figure it had to happen during this time , but luckly im here day in and day out to keep an eye on them .

so glad i found this website, it makes this a lot easier having people i can go back and forth with making sure im not doing anything wrong. otherwise i would have probably lost my buck a week ago.

I didn't have as many supplies to go for a month as we needed. When stores are limiting purchases you have to make more trips. On one hand it would be nice to get a month worth of essentials and luxuries but I understand other people need the same things.

I heard that unemployment has been terribly delayed. People who filed back in February are still waiting on their first checks. I hope yours is resolved soon.

I'm glad we were able to help. When I first got rabbits there were no message boards. It was a lot of trial and error. I lost my share in the learning process.

i would have loved to bulk buy chicken food , but limit one 50lb bag a person. a day .. which, of course will only last me 2 weeks at most. glad the grass and chickweed is coming up , so my birds can free range a little saving a bit of feed there. and of course they are loving the food scraps from me making everyday meals . i luckily grabbed enough rabbit food , strangely they dont eat as much as i thought they would being so young. they favor the hay more then the pellets.... doesnt help they took turns being sick.. either. but my buck, has so much pep in his step now , i see him running laps around his cage and tossing the cat jingle ball i gave him. so happy to see him feeling better. he even runs up to the front of the cage and demands head scratches.

my manager filed after i did , and got paid before i did .. thats just not fair.. lol its ok though , i just got to be patient and wait. there are plenty of people out there needing it way more then i do i may be on limited funds, but if im good at one thing , its being resourceful. i got laying hens and a few meat chicks getting of age. i may not be able to breed my rabbits till august. but thats the perfect time to do so , so its not too hot for them. as long as everything goes to plan that is .. i got another doe ready lined up for me to pick up in a few weeks so i have 2 doe's to breed, to my one buck. just in case one happens not to get pregnant, the other one should be.

im defiantly going to keep this site tabbed to keep an eye on for any questions i can look up or ask, and maybe when i get a little more knowledge to the animals i chose to raise, answer some questions myself. little communities like this are always nice to see. people helping each other , and learning new things. half of the things ive read on here that i can give a rabbit, i never found on these other "raising rabbit" forums or blogs.

So not to hijack this post but wish I had seen this after dealing with buns the last few weeks. Our story: my daughter got her pen of FFA meat rabbits early March. We have them in separate stackable cages in our house (story for another day). This is only our second year of doing this after a very successful show year last year. About two weeks in, one of the bunnies stopped pooping. We tried the gas drops, kale, etc. and ended up losing him about 5 days in. The breeder had warned us about gastric Enteritis when we got them. My daughter was devastated. About a week later we found someone posting they had lionheads. She wanted one to have as a “pet”. We agreed and brought one home. she was about 6-7 weeks old. We ordered a hutch but it’s been on shipping delay. We had cleaned the fourth cage out after the first bun passed so we did a sanitize on it and put the new one in it. 4 days later new bun went from happy, healthy, and bouncy to sick and gone in a 12 hour period. My husband was beside himself so he went and got her another. Round 2. We fed nothing but Timothy hay and pellets from the breeder. This one seemed to be doing great. Fast forward a week and a half and same thing happened, we lost the bunny within a 12 hour period. We are done With any new buns but started making a couple of connections. The three show bunnies are thriving. However we did realize that the three surviving bunnies were all from the same litter based on their ear Tattoos. The first one we lost had a different starting letter. So our question.... what is the likelihood that these three have something making the others sick? Or, is it just on us for not having a quarantine method in place? all three seemed to start with no poop, then stopped eating, then mucus poop/discharge, all went downhill really quick. Thoughts?

This has some information that might be helpful;
http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Generalities/Enteritis_en.htm

The only thing I disagree with in the article is the use of olive oil. I have read other articles that suggest olive oil is toxic to rabbits. In fact I lost an older rabbit 2 weeks after giving him a small dose of olive oil.
They also don't mention adding black tea to the water.

I have found Barbi Brown to be very knowledgeable about rabbit care and nutrition. She recommends tea and rolled oats if rabbits get runny poops.

I have a similar issue. I got two 8-week-old does from a craigslister a week ago. #1 seems fine, #2 has something going on. They have been in the same cage up until yesterday. Brand new cages, brand new hay, no idea if the feed is the same. #2 had gelatenous stool on day 2, then started to go down hill from there. Yesterday (day 6) she was really lethargic and underweight, with bright green snot (not hay dust). Today (day 7) she has a milky, slightly green mucus coming from her nose. I gave some doxycycline in their water starting on day 2.

I isolated her starting yesterday.

She ate a few bites of romaine lettuce and was drinking just a bit. She is still peeing but no poop (showing she isn't eating). I saw her arch her back before she peed, in a way that I thought she has belly issues too.

Any suggestions? She is a NZ/CAL/FL mix.

the baby gas drops for my rabbits really helped , both of mine recovered , i made sure they would drink , even if i had to syringe water into their mouths a few times a day, and organic applesauce, no sugar . i would syringe that into them to keep weight up . and when they start taking it willingly i know their close to recovery. and once their pooping and their temperature is back to normal i will give them a tablespoon of applesauce 2 times a day ,for about a week to help get weight back up to normal. it took 6 days from beginning to end to get my rabbits from , sick , to in recovery. then 3 more days to get some pep back in their step .

keep a very close eye on the rabbit that seems fine as well , im pretty sure my female got what my male had , just by being in the same room. make sure to wash your hands after touching the sick rabbit , or before you touch the healthy one , i cant tell if this is contagious or not , but again considering my female who was healthy till i got my male , i have no idea... touch her ears and make sure their not cold. as thats a sign of them not feeling good, animals are really good at hiding when their not feeling good till they start feeling really bad and cant cover it up .

give them a bowl of water, to go with their waterbottle, mine both seemed to want to drink out of the bowl when sick , but when getting better they started drinking from the bottle again.

i took a lot of tips from this thread to help my buns , especially the baby gas drops, black tea, dandelions , grass, and baby food, as i had that stuff on hand already, or was easy to get. really helped them out.

Thanks, I will try the applesauce. I have a bowl of water with some doxycycline, ACV, and a little bit of dissolved sugar in it. Yesterday she seemed a little better than the day before; eating a dandelion flower stem and some grass, and being a little more upright. Today she is laying down with her chin rested on the water bowl. She continues to drink a little bit - not a lot but some.

My rabbits are outside in individual cages (except these two; now they are separated) and I have this sick one far away from the others. I have given everyone doxy in their water, as a preventative. And I am very conscious about what I touch and excessively wash my hands. I'm 99% certain this is Pasturella and it "can" be transmitted to humans, though not common.

I can cull; I would rather not. And, rabbits are next to impossible to find in my area right now with people in a craze over C-19.

It sounds like I just need to keep it up and hope she recovers.

mine are stuck indoor right now till i can get their outside area fixed up and all that. trying to get it done before the cold front ends so they just dont get tossed outside while its hot. and at the moment im thankful that i have them indoors otherwise i wouldnt have noticed that there was no poop . since it will just fall to the ground.

if she has what mine had , i have high hopes she will recover. i was afraid i was going to have to cull my male when i seen what was happening , but when he recovered and then she got sick , i knew what to do to get them better... i didnt do the avc or doxy in water, i was afraid putting anything in their water would deter them from drinking it .

i also gave gentle belly rubs while they where recovering, i could feel the gas bubble in their stomach shifting every time i did.

hopefully after them being sick like this , will make them stronger in the long run. and produce huge healthy litters :)

no antibiotics, im weary of using antibiotics at all, as it can actually do more harm then good , if they dont actually have an infection... lowers the antibodies , good and bad , and harder for them to fight things off . i follow that in my life as well. for me , if i dont take an antibiotic , im sick for less time than i am if i take them. so i took that into account when i take care of my animals as well. but everyone and all animals are different. but thats just my experience.

I'm new to Pasturella, but didn't think it can be cured without antibiotics?
i honestly have no idea what they got, but what ever it was , it didnt need an antibiotic , yours could have something different. mine just had the mucus poops then nothing till i gave them gas drops for a few days. my male did have a little nose discharge for a day or 2 but when he started feeling better , it cleared up as well. my female didnt have anything going on with her nose, or eyes.

i would snuggle with them while they where sick, had their body up near my face quite a bit , and i never heard any restrictions of lungs , just a little gurgle here and there as their tummy was turning. again im still new to rabbits and raising them , but when i looked up pasturella it sounded more like a upper respiratory infection , rather then a tummy thing. but i could be wrong.

Once upon a time you could find antibiotic types and dosages for pasturella. Today I cannot find any information about the antibiotic dosage. Everything I did find either said contact your vet or give supportive therapy since it cannot be cured, only supressed.
