Is this cattle mineral okay?

446 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mpete
I bought a bag of calving/lactating/rebreeding mineral for my cow and am wondering if this is okay to give to my goats.

Calcium 12.5-15%
Phosphorus (not less than) 12%
Salt 15-18%
Magnesium (not less than) .01%
Cobalt (not less than) 60 ppm
Copper (not less than) 5000 ppm <---------I know goats need a lot of copper but is this too much?
Iodine (not less than) 100 ppm
Manganese (not less than) 7000 ppm
Selenium (not less than) 26ppm
Zinc (not less than) 8000 ppm <------------Doesn't zinc interfere with copper absorption?
Vitamin A (not less than) 350,000 IU/lb
Vitamin D3 (not less than) 30,000 IU/lb
Vitamin E (not less than) 350 IU/lb

Is there too much or too little of anything? Can anybody recommend any good websites where I can learn about minerals that goats need?? Thanks.

I'll respond. I feed just a general livestock loose mineral similar to your list of ingredients. I've been feeding this mixture for years, never a problem; keep it cost effective and simple. If they have plenty of browse and access to minerals, I'd not worry....Enjoy your goats.
Sounds great to me but I'd like to hear more from other seasoned folks too.
What kind of copper is in this? Copper sulfate only in high amounts will do more harm then good. You want copper in at least 2 forms, Copper Oxide, copper amino acid complex, etc. Read your label and see where this stuff comes from. Not sure about the rest.
I do the same as topside 1 - feed a loose livestock mineral. That is all that is available in this area, and it has worked good for me for nine years. I also have a mineralized salt block in each pen.
Isn't the phosphorus only spose to be about half of the calcium? From what I've been reading if the ratio isn't right then the calcium doesn't get absorbed or something along those lines. One of the other threads said something about 1:2.

If I'm wrong I'd like some insight because this is how I understand it to be.
I feed a good cattle mineral, and bolus with copasure.

The copper in the mix comes from copper polysaccharide complex, copper sulfate, and copper chloride.
from what I understand if you "free choice minerals" you should not have more than 1500 ppm. If you feed daily then its 15-20 ppm.
Copper toxicity symptoms include red/brown urine.
Also, Urinary Calculi can be in does and wethers/bucks. The calcium/phosperous ratio is off and could cause you problems...
lead, iron, manganese, sulfates, cadmium, molybdeneum all interferr with the absorption.
I got this information off tennesseemeatgoat.com
