Can I use new 5 gallon buckets purchased from the hardware department as containers or should the buckets be food grade?

    Thanks.

if they are new i suppose they should be okay what you really want to stay away from i think are the paint and petrol buckets but also call around to local store bakery departments you can usually get there used frosting buckets from free to Much cheaper then new buckets say from home depot i think itll be okay some people may say NOO they will leach and etc but if you have ever grown veggies in tires i guess it would be the same thing basicly

As long as they did not hold harmful chemicals I would use them.

My DFIL made topsy-turvy planters with 2+/- gallon buckets last year.

I've used them for tomato plants, banana trees, and other types of plants many times.

They might be yellow and have Paul Menard's NASCAR number on them.....or you could use Junior's Bud cases.........

I use 5-gallon buckets every year that come from the local grocery store bakery dept. and they do fine. They grow beautiful tomatoes!
