I made a list of wedge issues recently. Those things have divided us pretty well.

Imagine if we had an issue of consequence to decide as a nation. We might even go to war.

go to war with who? each other?
Yes.

With the divide so wide, I have to wonder if there is some issue, some matter that would cause us to take it to the next level.

Don't know if you are watching the news any, but the big thing is fake news tear jerkers about all the hospitals being full. But what is really happening is that health care workers are standing up, taking it to the next level. Deciding that the reality they know, and the lies they hear are not something they need to be part of. Police have been doing the same thing. We don't have to fight, we don't have to do anything but quit carrying the country. Trucking industry, same thing. I know guys right now enjoying early retirement, sabbatical, extended vacation, etc. Some do show up if the price is right, and some people are desperate for drivers. A lot of it started with the election, people can smell a rat, and if those people can make it off of savings, the garden, side hustle, etc. they can do more damage than a standing army. This is an extension of the very evident cold civil war that this nation is experiencing. Hope the leftists enjoy their dumpster fire.

Much like the Revolution and the first civil war, if we were to split in that way again, it would be for many reasons. Historians would pick the ones that sound good (Taxation without representation, slavery, etc..) and largely ignore the fact that there were dozens of reasons that varied from person to person, area, to area.

You are right. Healthcare workers see personally what is happening on the COVID front and many are rebelling at the nonsense. Of course the government will not admit it is their policies causing the problem, so they double down on the mandates and make the rebellion stronger. But, when has government ever admitted their policies were the cause of any problem? Now when they are borrowing (printing) trillions of dollars that will further destroy the country, who will they blame when the damage becomes apparent? They will blame the rich for not paying enough taxes to cover the spending and use that as a reason to raise taxes on everyone. Sometimes people think the country is headed in the right direction and sometimes the wrong direction but right now most people see the country headed straight down. The polls show it.

We won't actually fight amongst ourselves because we are to lazy. It would make us miss Entertainment Tonight. And the majority won't have that. We will continue to complain and wring our hands though.

We are already at war with each other. Some, like BLM, etc. choose to do it overtly, others use words, many choose to stay hidden under the guise of anonymity.

Or a state or group of states could just decide to split off from the United States and form their own country/countries. Under the current constitution splitting is not possible but that is what amendments are for and it does allow for splitting if it is approved by all branches of the government. Much healthier way than war to dissolve a country. The US already proved that with their Civil War. The south was forced to remain and the resentment is still active.

What the union proved was 鈥渕ight makes right鈥, nowhere in our constitution does it say a state or group of states cannot secede and form their own country.

Be Prepared is Half the Victory could also be applied to why the South failed by going to war. Lots of bravado but not facing the realities. Might was not right but it was facing an unprepared and inferior financial enemy.
  • The North had a population of 22 million people against the 9 million in the South (of whom almost half were slaves.)
  • The North was more industrial and produced 94 percent of the USA鈥檚 pig iron and 97 percent of its firearms. The North even had a richer, more varied agriculture than the South.
  • The Union had a larger navy, blocking all efforts from the Confederacy to trade with Europe.
  • The Confederacy hope that France and Britain would come to their aid due to their need of cotton, but these countries had enough cotton and a bigger need for Northern corn.
  • The North controlled both the shipping and railroad avenues, allowing them to trade and to get supplies fairly quickly.
  • The Union had more support: four slave states still remained loyal and not everybody in the 11 Confederate states were on the Confederate side. There were still plenty of people in the South that supported the Union.
  • Many slaves fled to the Union armies, providing even more manpower.
  • The South squandered their resources early in the war by focussing on conventional offensives instead of non-conventional raids on the Union鈥檚 transportation and communication infrastructure.
  • Lee鈥檚 offensive war strategy had a high cost in casualties, destroying a large part of the Confederate army.

People have been packing up and stacking up down here for generations. Why would someone from the North want to retire down here.??? The mosquitoes are as big as turkeys, snakes everywhere and coyotes will snatch up their small pets!???

that is what they are hoping for , they are running a classic campaign of division how did Iraq become Iraq , the British drew maps that put people of competing enthicitity and religion against each other in every election no one group stronger than the other a 3 or 4 way struggle for power you get a dictator or you get generations of stagnate bickering.

the difference is the dictators are working on also gaining the majority engineering one group to be stronger than every other in every election

I don't think there will be large scale open warfare unless and until there is some sort of collapse. A major economic collapse would do it. We are 9 missed meals away from chaos.

You should write down your measurements now. I doubt the ones passing out the uniforms will be using a tailor.
