It has been a loooooong time since I have been on this site, but I finally decided to get off food stamps. The best move I have ever made, and I'm going back to learning how to be self reliant. I was forced to move into a diffrent apartment, and I used the last of my food stamps to stock up on much needed things like coffee, creamer and sweetener. Other than that, I'm doing just fine! I'm training myself, to not go shopping for food until I really need to. I've got things stored that I like, and things to drink. Haven't managed to quit the soda, so I still buy that, and frozen treats. Our dollar store has icees in big boxes of 100, so I use those. Found a recipe for liquid detergent I'm going to try. I'm still wanting to get a hold on a hand washing machine, just haven't tried yet.
I have only been off the aid for two or three months, but I'm doing fine.
    Thanks!
    Michelle

Michelle, If you aren't already of your local freecycle group I suggest you join. Ask for the hand washing maching there. Congrats on getting off the stamps. Sometimes people need a little help. Been there. :stars: Now some from NOLA need a little help. I'm happy to return the favor.

I'm not sure there is a freecycling group here, and I don't know the first place to look, because Quincy, IL is such a small place, not overly small, but we don't have much going on online
    any Illinoians out there?

    Good deal Michelle -
sure feels good to get rid of that help, but I know you paid for it in red tape.

Welcome to the next first day for the rest of your life.

congratulations Michelle!!! It's a scary step to axe the safety net, but you'll be better for it soon enough.

In case it helps.... here's how I got what I needed when I was on assistance or during very lean times.....

I offered people with a garden to trade weeding for produce

I offered to can/cook/freeze produce in exchange for half their produce (worked well for people who had way too much garden for their stomaches - I also ate a lot of zucchini)

I did a lot of trading, bartering and working for items I needed/wanted.

    Hope this helps.

Do you have a Grocery Outlet and a Big Lots? Since I started shopping at those stores our grocery bill has gone down significantly :) Congrats!
