Nature is very powerful when it concerns survival.

About 13 years ago, we had some peonies that we needed to move. We dug them up and gave them to a friend of my DD's. Then we planted asparagus n the area. Well, the asparagus didn't do well and became choked out by weeds. So, we cut it down and the area became part of our yard.

Well, here we are 13 years later and when Roger was mowing the yard, he called me over. Lo and behold, we have peonies growing there. the rhyzomes or roots must have went dormant but, since we're coming out of dry spell, they "woke" up.

The previous resident here mowed the peonies along with the grass for 8 years. Took it about two to return to full form:)
