As stated, you do need it to go above roof, for draw and ember clearance.
It's not difficult to do it right, you should be able to get replacement parts locally.
I use a Tee for the elbow going up with a cap on the bottom for cleaning out.
There's a brace on this link and some pipe brackets. You can use them for support.
