Hi comfortablynumb, Yep, I'm one of those mad cloners, started out cloning stevia (sweet herb) and caught the bug,now just about everything on our little farm gets a turn at being cloned. Going to try some strawberry guava this spring. Daryll in NW FLA

Any cloners here? I havent in a few yrs but I used to have a nice greenhouse at my other house (moms house now, my new greenhouse is still a plan on paper). I used to clone everything. 2 plants of each flower i had (i used to have a sea of flowers around... dunno really why I dont anymore) i kept in the greenhouse all winter and then cloned as many new ones as i wanted in the early spring. Most all my flora on the hill is something I cloned from someone elses yard or pinched out of a garden someplace. I even cloned trees, buit that takes a long time. At the point where I was getting good at cloning woody shrubs, I moved and the clone lab ceased to be. (but I know everywhere I walk I see my cloning handiwork)

I've thought about cloneing myself, but don't think I can burden the world with another me...
yup. plant cloner here. wife gets on my case about it. sez i always divide too soon. also start lots of cuttings. when i get settled i hope to set up a little lab to clone orchid plants--real tissue culture. also wanna do some grafting of fruit-trees, another sort of cloning i guess. ever try scooping or scoring tulips, etc? it's great--u get 5-10 little bulbs from every big bulb. also scaling lillies--each scale from the lily bulb gives u one to three tiny little bulbs.
heck i'm so far gone that yesterday i was looking at some stored turnips. where the greens start to sprout, they get a small bulb-like thingie. now if i planted those..... but cloning turnips Is a bit much, no?

When you say cloning, do you just mean taking cuttings? or are there other techniques? gobug
cloning by cuttings, tissue culture, root pieces, ect. tissue culture is pretty cool, it's tricky if you dont have a stabil incubator type set up but even a half baked rig can work. cloning refers to prety much anything other than seed sowing.
yea cloning a turnip is a bit much but if ya havent got any seeds and you have a few turnips....

i remembered another plant i cloned. leeks. if u leave em in the ground over winter they grow offsets. since leeks are so slow i thought the offsets would be cool. i planted a pretty good bed of 'em. unfortunately they went to seed very small. that was in a hot dry garden, tho. i'll try it again if i get a chance.
also, i plan to try buying a few raspberry plants (all i can afford) and taking root cuttings. should get quite a few plants from a single plant. i have no qualms about taking a perfectly good plant and cutting it up if i stand a chance of getting 20 or 30 little plants from it.

Yep.....closet cloner. I'm too cheap to go buy the stuff myself. I love going to people's gardens and seeing their cool stuff. I get some cuttings and bring them home. I have a mist system set up for my tomato seedlings so when the maters are in the ground, the cuttings go in for rooting. As for the pH adjustment, lime (relatively inexpensive) will raise the pH of water rather easily. If you don't have lime, limestone from a driveway will do the same, only slower. As far as pH reduction, composted oak leaves and/or pinestraw is low in pH. Make a "tea" with the composted leaves or pinestraw and the pH should be about 5-6. Not sure what "safe" chemical is readily available for pH reduction but the leaves and pinestraw work well.

I changed the pH of 2 1/2 gallons of water from ph8 to pH6.5 by adding 1 tsp. of white vinegar to the water. My cloning setup calls for a ph of 6.5. :cowboy:

I built a clone machine years ago, I love it, cost about 20 dollars for the misters and everything, Will clone 72 cuttings at a time,
Taking cuttings from established plants is an ancient practice(along with other methods of plant propagation).
My favorite thing is visiting the old, abandoned homesteads around here and taking cuttings etc from the heritage plants I find there . Flowers, bushes and trees. As well as many wild species. I do check out the species first though as many of them are not a good thing to bring home.

where in Oregon are you? I never can find any abandoned homestead up here in the Gorge...they are building everything up so much.

This is a little off the topic, but I have a question about irises.
I dug up my irises late summer last year, let dry and put them in brown paper bags and put them in the garden shed.
We are going to be putting this house up for sale soon, that is why I dug them up last year.
My g.grandmother, my grandmother, my mother and myself all had purple irises. That is why I am saving these and taking with me
to plant at our homestead.
What I am asking is; do I plant the bulbs in the fall? :shrug:
Also, can I separate some of the bulbs that have joined together?

Wow, I have never heard of one of them before, that is pretty neat!
Dip cutting end like roses, sand cherries, sage into rooting hormone then just stick them in moistened sandy soil until they take or just bury a bit of the bottom branches and they'll root without hormone. I started using rooting hormone about 11 years ago and noticed a big difference. Making a little lengthwise nick in soft bark cuttings seems to help as well. To root a larger cuttings I nick the branch 3/4 the way around not cutting it off the parent, dab on hormone powder water and then wrap a plastic baggie with soil bandage around the wound tying the two ends with twine and check it next year to see if it takes (usually does)

Hi B Mom! Sorry been really busy, spring cleaning and my vaccum blew up and company is coming!!! AARRGGHHHH!!!!! So I am trying to get a brain and catch up..LOL I am at the extreme southern end of the Willamette Valley, 16 miles directly south of Cottage Grove past CG Lake. So, you are in the Columbia Gorge on the WA side? Anywhere near Pendleton Mills? You are sure right about all of the building going on there! It seems there are fights all of the time over who can or can't build something! I hope you are getting real spring now. IT seems La Nina can't make up it's mind whether we are going to get dry enough to mow or not!!! It's a jungle out there!!!! :help: LOL
