Scooped up a turtle off the road a few months ago and my mum had a strong allergic reaction to it but hadnt had a problem to the first turtle we ate so we narrowed it down to the fact that the turtles round here are all from ponds that are edged with houses and have many lawn chemicals washing into them and the turtles get contaminated by them.

Have picked up a nice little soft shell turtle this week so have put a fence round our little garden pond and its now in there.

The plan is to feed it for awhile and then eat it AFTER any contaminants have worked their way out of its system.

Question is, how long to keep it till we eat it?

As a kid my cousins neighbor wanted every turtle we caught. He would keep them in an old horse trough with clean water being circulated through it. I believe he fed them table scraps. Turtles eat all kinds of nasties when they are in the river, it is probably getting ready to hibernate and not interested in food right now. Turtles should be no more dangerous to eat than any bottom feeding fish, such as catfish...which coincidentally the old man would put in the trough to "unmuddy" them as well.
