They'll try for as long as their mum will let them but think 30-90 days as typical.

My 5 month old twins are STILL after mom for drinks...and she lets them!

  4. 5 months? wow. how big are they compared to mom?
If lambs will just drink for as long as they can, maybe a better question would be how long do the mothers actually produce milk?

For a dairies purpose ( think useful production) 120 days would be a minimum, and depending on the breed up to 180 and even 200 days. Keep in mind these are a dairy breed and fed/managed to keep production up.

We let our ewes wean their own lambs.... our sheep are so efficient with grass, they tend to get fat. Nursing lambs for a long time helps with their weight control and grows nice lambs too!
