Can it be done? I would like to try it but after looking around I wonder if you can grow hops in South Dakota. We are in zone 4. I read that most hops are 120 day. Are there any short season varieties that produce well?

I've had no problem with hops in zone 4. My hops have done well for 15 years or so, and we are close to zone 3, although in recent years it is more like zone 5. I would think that dryness and wind might be more of a problem than cold.

Do you know what varieties you have? I see Pinetree has Cascade and Nugget but I did find a few sites that specialize in hops with more selection.

    Thanks!

I had hops growing in my yard in Lead, SD. I don't know what kind, as it was old, but it was growing with woodbine, so there was plenty of competition. I would say grow for it! Just find one with the properties you want, I always had blooms.

Mine are alive in zone 3 but don't exactly thrive. I think that may have more to do with a dry location than temps. I plan to move them to a spot where they will get more water when we thaw out in April.
