I am new here and this is my first post. I have seen several questions about butchering and how to dispatch rabbits. This is not a problem for us. The problem is that we do not know what to look for to show us that the rabbit was healthy. I have been told to look for white or black spots on liver and lungs. I seems like all the lungs have white spots to some degree. There was one with raised white spots. Outwardly none of thes rabbits showed any signs of illness. Are these animals safe to eat? Does cooking kill the disease that these spots may be indicative of? Does anyone have any information for me?
    Very concerned.

I cannot believe that no one on this meat rabbit site and an answer to my question. What do you all do? Am I just overreacting and do not need to check the organs for signs of illness? Surely someone has some advice for a newby.

    Hello...

From what you have described you have Cocci (Coccidiosis). Here is a site that helps explain it and what to do for it...

    http://islandgems.net/diarrhea.html

Now on to your question... Can you eat the meat? Yes you can, but do not eat the Liver and do not let any other animals eat the liver.

Thank you for your response. Just for clarification: It was the lungs that had the spots not the liver. Liver was completely normal looking. I will check out all your information links. Again, thank you.

This is a busy time of year so if it takes a few days to get posts answered then bear with us. I agree with Linda, sounds normal.

Sorry..liver, lungs....it is fair season, breeding season, I have my Sons and daughter home on leave with a house full here, puppies being taken to the airport, and preparing to go a rabbit conference. At least I "L" part right! <smile>

In general, as long as the spots are just spots (no abscesses) and it's
confined to the lungs, the meat can be consumed w/o problems.

The remainder of the carcass should be checked with extreme care and if
in doubt, feed it to the dogs.

Here is a picture of lungs...anything like this:

scroll down just past the middle of the page...

Thank you. The lungs looken nothing like that picture. For the most part it was just "spoltches" with the exception of one. That one definitely had "spots" though not remotely like the picture on that site you directed me to. That one went in the trash just to be safe. I think that the others are fine based on what I have heard here. Thanks for your help.

    :p

Sorry for the confusion in my posting and deleting earlier.

What I had posted (and what Tracy referred to) was:

    "Sounds normal to me".
