Hi, everybody. My fiance and I are creating a "domestead" on 20 acres in east Tennessee overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We're building a geodesic dome home, so it's a domestead instead of a homestead :)

We've been in big Southern cities most of our lives and always loved the outdoors, but in the year since we bought land, we're getting to know nature in a whole new way. Not only the power of it (easy to forget in a city with sidewalks, streetlights, and storm drains), but since we want to keep our additions in tune with the natural system, this year has been like going back to school. Animals, flowers, and edibles 101. Soil tests, sun, what we can expect to grow where. Is there a sinkhole under there? Since we're 1/2 mile up a mountain, how should we get power? Spoiler: due to County economic credits, we ran conventional powerlines at 4% of the cost of solar, sigh.

After year 1, we're the proud owners of a barn, street-legal 1978 F150 farm truck, Kubota tractor, and an official geotechnical report confirming there's no sinkhole under our homesite. Year 2 is kicking off with well and septic as soon as the ground dries out, then a dome build in the spring. Our foundation is dug. We just need warm weather now so concrete can set!

Every day presents a new question we don't have an answer for, but we've already found some answers here. Thanks to everybody sharing your experiences. We look forward to being part of the conversation. -Beth
