HELP Problems AFTER monthly Maintenance!

389 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  poultryprincess
Hi everyone, yesterday I did the "Monthly Maintenance" as posted here. I did all the steps & even did the #6 which is "housecall.antivirus" When i got on the site it said 2001 but figured it was still OK to do. It said it would take 2 hours to do a thorough Antivirus check. With 3 minutes left, I had to leave the computer for 15 minutes......when I returned, there was nothing going on. I clicked the refresh button, & it removed me from the site. I noticed the computer was taking a Long time to "load" so i did another Scandisk, & Defrag. Well today i am on the computer & it is still Really SLOW. The box @ the bottom which shows the info Loading ( don't know the proper term ) by using green squares is taking Forever to load. Sometimes it takes so long that the box disappears & I must click my mouse again to get it started again. I checked my computer, it says I have 70% of Unused space on my Hard-drive. I deleted Every Game on my computer to try & get it to move faster - No luck! ( I Never used the games anyway )
WHAT CAN I DO???? I bought my computer last yr, new - so what's wrong?
I have a 519K Intel Pentium 4 processor
512MB PC2-3200 DDR (?) 200GB
ANY IDEAS???? It's Veri frustrating, so I'm hoping someone here knows what's wrong - can't buy Another New computer! Many Thanx

Very little I know about computers, but did you get the results for the antivirus check? If you don't have the antivirus icon on your homepage, go to programs and find your anti virus name and click on it for info about the scan. They may have found a virus and waiting for you to contact them for the info they need. JUST A GUESS THOUGH lol Eddie

Eddie, I appreciate your willingness to help, but you are not helping. You are making it sound like you need to call your Anti-Virus software company to get something fixed.

While a virus is a possible issue, in this case I do not think it is. See next post.

The actual site for "Housecall" is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I am not endorsing this site over any other antivirus software, I will just say that I use it.

I do strongly recomend that you use an antivirus software program if you have broadband internet. If you want me to post some of the ones that are recommended in general I will.

If the slowdown is a recent issue, like if it started in the last week or so, chances are you do indeed have a virus.

The common sense train of though is that if every thing is normal, and you have done nothing different... Virus is the first thing you check for.

If you do have a virus (which I think you do, its either that or a hardware failure which I think is unlikely), you have a decision to make.

Do you have enough computer experience to work through this? Or should you call in a professional?

My best guess is that it will take $150 to fix this if you higher someone to do it.

MANY THANXXXXX, I finally got things working again! I emailed & read everything I could & it was more than One thing I did wrong. I'll explain -

1) I have "Rogers Yahoo" & NORTON's antivirus comes with Rogers. Soooo apparently if you have 1 Antivirus in place & you use Another.......things come to a snail pace. IF I wanted to use Housecall, I should have Dis-abled the Norton's first. I thought Housecall was mainly to rid Spyware, I should have read more on it, before using it.:nono:

2) I used CCleaner ( crap cleaner ) & found I had 42 & 1 "Critical" virus on my computer. I did the CCleaner, then a Spyware & cleared everything up. (( I Dis-engaged Norton's 1st, then put it back on - I'm getting the hang of it ))

3) I had made a Back-up disc Before things went crazy, so figured I should get rid of everything Use-less to me. I NEVER play games ( I don't know how anyone has Time for that.....I'd rather be on Homestead - LOL ) Soooo I Un-installed all the games that were on the computer. I have 70% Free space, so it wasn't really Clogging anything, but when I was having the problems, I was willing to do Anything....I Won't miss them.

Well, I Really appreciate the words of wisdom. The computer was working Fine until I did the "Maintenance" so I Knew it was something I did that day. Funny how you start to reply on the Speed of your computer. You get lost without this darn thing. I even called Roger's, because I have "High Speed" but the computer was slow. They checked & the problem was @ my end. I figured it was, but I had to close Every door to make sure. THANX AGAIN! I am up & running @ High Speed once again:hobbyhors
