Get your minds outta the gutter ;) .... I am talking about Blacksmithing!!! I had a bit of down time while heat treating knives today so I forged out this bottle opener...So I can access my emergency beer supplies after the SHTF ;) IMG_0289.JPG

I saw the title and, knowing what this poster does with his time figured it was about forging knives. But hey, a beer opener is important too....

    No mind in gutter here.

    Kid,
I saw a PBS special of a Japanese blacksmith using a clay crucible/forge and spending close to a month forging, mixing in charcoal for carbon and folding and hammering and cooling a blade he was crafting into a samurai sabre as smiths before he and his son did.

It was a long drawn out process but interesting.

What I found most interesting was that in this era, the few forgers skilled in the ancient sabre forging were still valued to create ceremonial , yet functional dress battle gear as was created many centuries ago.

I don't make Japanese style blades....but have used the very same methods.

There is one TV show that thrills me to no end: "Forged in Fire." http://www.history.com/shows/forged-in-fire

I don't have a TV but got to see more than a few of these shows at my brother's house.

In 2014 I saw an episode that I will never forget. All the contestants had the latest and greatest equipment, except one guy who apparently didn't have the money for all that expensive stuff. His blacksmithing equipment was very homespun and rather primitive... He even used a hubcap to contain his fire!

He produced a beyond-beautiful blade that passed the rigorous tests, and won the show!

I've got a few things going at present that make it unlikely that I'd be able to compete any time in the near future..But... who knows what the future holds...
