Eeek! How horrible!
when i moved here and was setting up monthly garbage pickup, the gal wanted my ss#, when i said no, she said they required it and i told her i was not giving it out.she relented, finally. talk about stupid!!! like their files are not accessible and are secret!!!!
Not mine, my MIL's. Opened up charges via computer and ran up over $20,000 worth of debt. Poor lady can't even get a phone in her own name. 80+ yrs old and feels like she is a nobody and will die with a bad name. A year of talking to lawyers and police has got us nowhere. It's just way too easy to do these days.
pq ... i pm'd ya ... hopefully mil filed a police report .. she has a LOT of options .... it won't be easy ... but it might be fun..
No one has borrowed mine as of yet, I did get my annual free credit report from the big three, and found out that my wifes number and my brothers are being reported as being mine for some reason.... and that i have lived where my brother has and does now...... I guess having same initials for first name could be contrued as similar.... but William and Walter are completely different......
Anyow at least nothing on my end is bad for now... been trying to get the information corrected.... somehow once they make a mistake they really dont care if its right or wrong it is there......
when I was setting up my water for my new house They asked for my ss# and I said no she then told me that they will have to charge me the highst deposit so I said I dont care ( thinking it was only 50 -100 bucks) well no I was wrong $358 dollars I said thats crazy so I gave her my ss # she ran it and nothing came back at all she was shocked she said you have nothing good or bad ( I do have bad credit med bills but not with that pitcular credit agency) well guess what people with no credit have to pay the same as people with the worst credit
So I paid $358 dollars to get my water turned on
Talk about robbing you blind
In 1999 I had my taxes done and was sent a letter by the IRS claiming that because I was receiving disibility payments, and also reported an income, they we're opening a case on me. Turned out an illegal from South America had guessed at a SS# (mine) and was receiving workers comp and disibility payments on that #.
All cleared up and it only costs me 2 trips to the tax office.
I heard that someone in my family is using someone elses ss #. She was getting SSI for years and some social worker stopped by one day and was asking for info. Blah, blah and your ss# is ---/--/---- right? She said yes, that's it, knowing fully well it wasn't. Since that time her monthly checks have increased, or so she's bragged to someone I know. Since she was diagnosed with all sorts of mental problems many years ago and takes lots of meds for it, she thinks that will be her ready excuse if she is ever caught. If all this is true, then she has to be one of the most deceitful people I know. And worst of all is that she claims to be a Christian.
This is one of the reasons why it is important to check your credit score once a year or so. This way you can correct anything that shows up asap. If there is anything odd or you suspect your SS # has been used you can put a fraud alert on yourself so that when someone tries to use your credit you will be notified. You will have to show more proof yourself when applying for credit but it will give you better piece of mind.
I get an itemization of my SS contributions about every two years and it shows how much I contributed every year since I started working. If I were to see a big jump and my salary hadn't increased this could be a big indicator that something has gone wrong.
Ha! I got you beat there. My dad filled out a credit card offer in my mother's name, but my ss#. After he (they?) ran the balance over $10,000 they filed bankruptcy, but the debt was still on my credit. I was 19 when I found this out, called the card company to have it removed and they tried to give me a hard time, until I asked how many 15 yo's they gave credit to! I did have to supply proof of my age & ss# to them. There is nothin better than family.
Knew a fellow who was on SSI and his brother who just got out of prison started using the disabled fellows SS#. SS stopped his disability checks till he could 'prove' he wasn't working! Seems the burden of proof falls on the innocent.
My son is friends with some unsavory characters who live in the city. They or their girlfriends/wives use their children's ss# to get telephone, cable or electric after they have run up their bills so high and can't pay them. They even use newborn babies' numbers! One of my friends said that her brother went to get a loan for a car and they said he had bad credit when in fact, he had never had any before. It turned out that their father (who hadn't even been seeing them for a number of years!) had been using his ss# for all kinds of things.
It does kind of make me angry that when we called a fuel company about delivering kerosene to us that they have to have our ss#s even when we are doing it on a cash basis and have our own tank. So they can do a credit check. And charge you more if you don't have a perfect credit report.
Just a humble word of advice: Do not ever release that number. Either form a trust or a company, even police radio that number for anyone to hear.
Peace and Good Day
Not only should you not give it out, You should know that it is not required that you give it to anyone but the Socialist Security Administration. Furthermore it is ILLEGAL for anyone to tell you that it IS required by law when in fact it is not! Here is a list of some people who will try to force you into giving them your SSN
and last but not least the IRS
If anyone is interested I have about a dozen forms for people to use regarding their social security numbers.
Just PM with your email address and I will send them to you.
They are mostly PDF files
