Hello everyone. As much as I love dogs, I have several reasons I would prefer to get a guard donkey. But I'm still learning about them. I have read a few times that they need to be able to see clearly. My yard is not exactly a rainforest but it does have trees. Can someone on here take a look at this area and tell me if a donkey would work out here? Central West Arkansas. I plan to have sheep. I currently have chickens and guinea fowl.

Anything you can see, a donkey can see as well or better. And he will hear it long before he sees it.

Mandi100, I got sidetracked about ears. Sorry.

It goes without saying that a miniature donkey is out of the question; they're just too small to be efficient guardians. I'd suggest a standard or mammoth. Donkeys can certainly be used, but be aware that they, too, need care (hoof trims, worming, vaccinations, etc.). I know nothing about llamas. I hope you'll do some research on livestock guardians in general via Google. You could also try contacting the ADMS (American Donkey and Mule Society) at www.lovelongears.com although I'm not sure how active that organization is presently. Hope this is helpful!
