When you plant oats, barley, etc, do you have to buy special seed grain, or just buy a bag of grain and plant it. I want to plant grain in some pasture for fall pasturing cattle, goats, and hogs.
Also what would I need to harvest grain? I have a 40hp tractor.
I want to grow my own grains for my hogs. But I am trying to find out what would be the most economical (Cheaper to start) grain to grow. Corn or conventional grains?

Rob, get ahold of Gene Logsdon's book, "Small Scale Grain Raising". You're local library may have it or you can buy a copy. The hardcover editions are something of a collectors item and are a bit pricey but the paperbacks contain the same info and are still reasonable.
