They ate my garden up this year, worst I have ever seen them. Then just left about two weeks ago. Don't know, but I think the dearth of birds is making them worse.
I promise to take mine fishing if they catch enough bait. Seriously though, I've never heard of anything that will repel them successfully yet not hurt anything else. I assume you still want the bees to visit your garden and not die.
You could try neem oil (with a nod to Turtlehead). Since grasshoppers actually ingest the plant the neem oil ought to work.
