Out of curiosity, in Michigan specifically, what are the regulations for fishing on a creek on your property? The creek itself runs to a large river (miles down stream), but the creek itself is not navigable to the public per se.

Does one still need a license to fish on their private property?

I have at least 1/4 mile of river frontage. From how I understand it, I don't own the creek or the fish in it - that belongs to the Fish & Boat commission. So I can not legally fish from my own property without a license.

Of course each state will have different rules......

Yeah, I have 1500' for creek that divides my property... it's supposedly great for trout but I don't dare drop a line in until I find out. The information online isn't very helpful.... may have to call the state. :(

Better safe than sorry. It would have to be a pretty expensive fishing license to not be worth avoiding the fallout of not having it.

In Michigan you need a license to fish on your own property, a brook, creek, river or lake. If your going to be fishing for trout you have to also have a trout stamp.

Michigan at times has a free fishing week end where you can fish with out buying a license. this summer: June 10 & 11.

Since Tricky Ricky Snyder was elected you can not even hunt small game on your own property without buying a license either.

Here in NY - "A fishing license is required for anyone 16 years of age or older, whether the body of water is accessible to the public or not." Guess it's pretty cut and dry.......
