I was just wondering if anyone has ever used white pine for fence post without treating them? And if so what is the life expectency before you would need to replace them?
    Thanks eric

There's a test that's been running using different species and treatments for 52 years. Untreated white pine will probably last five years or less.

An older gent that lived near me cut posts from his farm and kept them soaking in used motor in a 55 gallon barrel in his tool shed. When he needed a post he would go to his source. He painted the above ground portion of his fence post and he seldom had to replace a post. His place always drew comments as to how nice it looked with his white fence.

    Darren,

    Who is conducting the test?

I am not doubting your statement at all, I fully agree. I ask as i would like to review it as I need to put up fences as soon as the gound thaws.

Well I was wrong. Seems the osage orange has lasted 66 years instead of 52 years. The test is at Oregon State University.
