Interesting thread and picture from another site. Over 40,000 FEMA trailers parked on rented farmland in Louisiana waiting to be scrapped.

Interesting...after Katrina, my sister was one of the thousands of people suckered into delivering a FEMA trailer to Louisiana. It was a nightmare. She was promised the delivery yard would be open 24hrs. It wasn't. She had to spend the night inside of the trailer with no food, water or toilet facilities. When she awoke, there was already a line of hundreds of trucks with trailers waiting to get into the lot. Thankfully, the lot people recognised that my sister and the 60 other people that also had to spend the night in their trailers, needed to be let in first.
Don'ta lot of those trailerws have trouble with formaldahyde or something?
Yes, but what they don"t tel you is that most manufactured homes and RV's have the same problem. People with Fema trailers just complained more.:hammer:

Nope, only the very cheap models. We once considered buying a mobile home. To get one that would not make you sick if you were inside too much meant that you could only buy the more expensive homes. The information about formaldayde was there, but only if you asked.

We decided not to buy. :umno:
I have lived in this mobile home since 1997, it never had the formaldahyde, eye burning smell. Of course this is a upgraded Fleetwood (one of the better brands around here). I do know going into a lesser, cheaper, type of mobile home can knock you over with that smell. One does have to be careful shopper if buying one of the mobile homes out there.

(I still want a real house, nice as this place is.)
I don't believe I'd want to live in one of these trailers if they were new. I wouldn't put a goat in them after the entitlementistas had trashed them. I might take the axle and frame, if they'd strip off the human habitation part.
Formaldehyde is in many products used in houses and RVs. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/formalde.html
Sources of formaldehyde in the home include building materials, smoking, household products, and the use of un-vented, fuel-burning appliances, like gas stoves or kerosene space heaters. Formaldehyde, by itself or in combination with other chemicals, serves a number of purposes in manufactured products. For example, it is used to add permanent-press qualities to clothing and draperies, as a component of glues and adhesives, and as a preservative in some paints and coating products.

A large part of the problem is it takes time for the levels to drop and heat and humidity make the products off-gas it even more.
Those are all perfectly fine now. The off-gassing of the Formaldehyde should be completed.

The "new smell" of a camper is the off-gassing. Not just Formaldehyde but other plastics and vinyls.

I'll keep my mouth shut as to what I think about the situation.
I think it would be rather neat to get one for small or no price, then at least gut it, and re-do the inside to be more like the Tiny Houses. It's a shame, in many senses, to see them just sitting there rotting due to lack of any upkeep or use. If nothing else they'd made storage sheds somewhere.

They outgass while new. Leaving the windows open a bit ti air them out, just like any new trailer does the trick.

Occasionally a bunch are sold by GSA here. http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/aucitsrh/#
my neighbor just bought a FEMA trailer, a 30 footer. his boss is getting them from some place in Illinois. bringing them up here and reselling them.

if i remember right my neighbor said he paid 3000 for it. he didn't know what his boss bought it for.
I never realized that the fema trailers were so big 14' x 60'. I can't believe people were complaining!!!! That's the size of my trailer and their's were alot newer. Grrrrr

It's really sad that these can't be put to some use besides just scrap.
