any one have the book Handy farm devices and how to make them.
on page 149 there is an apple picker that uses a handle a cloth bag and a wire ringlet at the end that goes in the tree, has anyone actually built it or have one. the drawing is not very clear.

A 2x2 stick, a larger soup can, & a couple screws. Cut a small V notch in the side of the can, screw the can onto the pole, and you are good to go.

The cloth bag would not bruise the apple, & might hold more apples, but just seems so hi-tech for me.

Tho, I built mine when I was about 10. :) mom used it for a decade, still sitting i the corner of the shed....

No, I have not built and tried the apple picker.

A little different twist on the design adds a flexible hose like dryer vent tubing.
The cloth bag is replaced so that the apple falls into the open end of the tubing/hose where it gently rolls into an awaiting container. Saves continually holding the weight of several apples, and taking the device down after a few to unload.

Please explain the v notch on the can. Is this to make the opening wider?

It catches the stem of the apple & helps seperate the apple from the tree on the tougher ones. Others just fall off about when you touch the apple.... :)

The V is only an inch or less deep.

I think I used a Dinty Moore - sized can?
