I am able to get lettuce, broccolli from starts and turnips to grow for fall crops. But my spinich and beets won't grow at all.
They sprout but hardly grow at all. I dug in composted manure/compost and plant where they still get sun.
The beet leaves get very dark red and stunted.
I plant in Aug. right after green beens are done. The green beens did fine.

we have been successful growing spinach as a fall/winter/spring crop. I'm thinking we start that crop in July. I make sure to water the seeds daily until they germinate. We are eating off the spinach crop still. I cover them with sleeping bags when it gets below 25*F at night and take the covers off, when the weather is like today, 50*F. I will cover the spinach again tomorrow because it is predicted to get to 16*F Wednesday night. If I can keep the ground from freezing, which I can do with the sleeping bags, the spinach will start growing again in March. They are full size plants right now.
