we always figured 1 ram to 25-35 ewes, unless you are buying a yearling ram. Or how many ewes you are running. Or how big is the free range? Or how long you really want to lamb! We were running 1700 ewes in one of our big range pastures (2500-3000 acres) so we always had a nice mix of different aged rams, hence the 25-35 head rule we used. Some years we had 'extra' rams, so halfway through the breeding season we would pull out the thin rams (that had been working hard) and replaced them with the fresh rams.
another note: If he ends up extremely virile and in great shape, and your ewes are cycling nicely, he could breed 20 in a day...

20 A Day !!!! Whew makes me tired just thinking about it. I'm running 18 ewes with one ram on about 8 acres so I should be fine. Thanks for the info.
