After almost 8 months since our old work penny ante poker gang got together to play cards. last night the six of us got together for a few hours and I built the $2.27 in my change holder into $6.08.

I wasn't the big winner but the other five all brought their 2 pound butter tubs of change and all 5 were betting "high like they wanted to sleep in the park" while I only bet high after I had won about a $1.30 or so and then I mixed my high betting just like my tight low betting / raising with random shifts between a few bluffs and when I had the cards.

The fun part of it all is the rest of this poker club all forget that the small table stake can't be run out by the bigger stakes since they don't play increasing ante.

They show up with a few pounds of change and laugh at me dropping a few dollars of pennies, nickles, dimes and a few quarters from my change pouch and even though they watch me grind through the game winning some, losing some or folding but always grinding on making small wins until I can bet heavier once in awhile to keep them off guard.

We all agree that using loose change keeps it interesting but they bring pounds of change while I bring 3 or 4 dollars in change at the most to also practice for when I can afford to go to a casino card room.

They claim they're practicing too but my perspective is my $3 or so in change in our penny ante games is like the few hundred I save up to play in a casino and their tubs of change would be like taking $100k or more to lose at a casino and like me, they can only set aside a few hundred to sit a table.

We all agree that when we go to the casinos , our gaming money is meant to be lost in between the shows , buffets and stuff we do with our wives or girlfriends, but I enjoy bringing home a little more than I took to the casino so the next time I go I'm not visiting as much of my money I left on past trips even though I figure the free buffets and comp packages make it worth the weekend trip LOL.

I have never been to Vegas, but I knew a fellow, minimum wage, both he and his wife worked.
Poor as they were, they saved their money and took one or two trips to Vegas each year. Casinos much closer, but they drove to Vegas. Never did understand that. Nice folks, too

They may have gone to Vegas because that was where they got complimentary lodging and flight packages to add their vacation money to the previous vacation money they visited when they went there.

After two vacations that I paid for setting aside money to gamble, the third year the casino we visited sent me a comp package for four with two mid range rooms for 4 days and round trip air fare.

A friend and I took our dates and the 4 of us were able to play with most of our yearly vacation money while enjoying some shows as part of the promotion package.

My understanding of how casinos do comp packages is of course high dollar spending "whales" get first rate comps but they also comp smaller fish customers with a couple grand down to a few hundred to keep the lower stake games active and the slot machines ringing to maintain the carnival like atmosphere on the oxygen pumped / no clocks on the walls gaming floors as some win and others lose to make the casino profit.

An old gambler taught me to not consider a casino a place to make an income . but rather an adult amusement park with a on site hotel and my gambling money like buying ride tickets at a county fare and instead of buying popcorn and cotton candy, enjoy the free buffets, low cost food courts and free or low cost shows even if only grind playing the lower stake card rooms hoping to grind play extend or build up my table stake.

A few years back 8 of us went to a casino in Mississippi with vacation money we 4 guys made from working overtime for a couple months to cover our casino lodging for a 3 day weekend and to give us and our wives $800 each gaming rolls for the 3 days.

While we guys spent most of our game floor time at the poker tables, our wives spent their time at the slot machines and blackjack tables.

That weekend, one of the guys and I passed on some of the shows the women wanted to see and spent over 45 hours at the tables, relaxing and having fun.

Our wives all dropped their gambling money down to pocket money except the wife of the guy who played overtime poker with me and she came home with a grand from slots and black jack.

Our last night, he called our room an suggested a last hurrah at the low ante tables since he had $80 and I had $60 left and he loaned me $10 from his playing money so we could both buy into a $20 table and have the required $50 table stake.

As we played for a few hours , he got beat to the felt and took the rail to get his 50 back in free buffet food and soft drinks as he watched me grind my 40 and his 10 up to $700 in 2 more hours as I caught good pockets and tipped the dealer in addition to the normal pot rake for luck.

Then I made the mistake of taking his suggestion to cash out of the low ante table, grab a glass of sweet tea, offer to give him his $10 back but instead he talked me into buying into a higher stake game for a 20% prop backing from him since that was how much he increased my initial last hurrah table stake.

While I did good at the low stake table, the higher buy in /stake table had tougher grinder players and although I grind played up to $1200 or so in a few hours, on an all in bet by one of the better poker faces at the table, as I thought my pocket aces with an ace on the flop with a 10 and a 7 was a good 3 of a kind and went all in , the 4th street and river cards turn up a 10 and a king , giving me a full house, but I got beat by another player with pocket 10s for 4 of a kind and we were felted.

On our way to our rooms, he asked me how i was going to tell my ex wife I had lost a $1200 stake and potential $5000 or so in winnings since I was one of the short stacks and I told him if she asked how I did , I was just going to say i had lost my last $60 in our last hurrah session before some sleep, which Is what I did since I went down with my last 60.

Sadly on the drive home, he gave his wife a play by play of our last hurrah session and she called my wife on her cell. Talk about a long drive home even though I reminded her that I was having county fair fun , stakes at the table didn't count until I cashed out or got felted and getting felted by 4 of a kind was no different than not knocking over 5 milk bottles at a fair.

I also reminded her it was our vacation and we saw 4 good shows, had a nice room, good food and i got a free subscription extension on my Card Player magazine and on the 4 previous casino vacations I came home with my gambling money and $15 or $20 and our vacation paid for on three and on one I came home with an extra $300 and we all only count our money when we left home, kept enough set aside to cover gas there and back and counted any extra when we got home and any wins , losses or bust outs at the casino were just the cost of of our vacation.

A professional poker player I will never be, but I will never be a gambling addict, don't drink alcohol when I go and have fun playing strangers just as I do playing penny ante with friends at home and maybe some day I will be able to save up for another vacation weekend, but if I don't, I will continue enjoying penny poker Friday nights at home once in awhile. 😃 :)

Pre-covid there used to be 3 Texas holdum games a week here, each hosted by different local bars on different nights. Entry was free. Players Would get extra chips if they ate and/or drank before the game. The bar provided gift cards for first and second place so you could have a free night out if you won. I still have a gift card for when they start up the games again.

One bar is still running a game once a week. I have participated a couple of times but I don't want to catch covid so haven't been going evey week.. I have been seriously isolating, if you don't count the cat, but I may have to open it up because I need more human contact. Wish they would hurry up with the vaccination.
