I am seeking information for a young family member whose gum is extremely swollen and mushy feeling. Apparently, there is no pain, but I'm wondering if this is an abscess and if so, how to treat it until a dentist becomes available?

Is there a popcorn hull between the tooth and gum?

I'd irrigate it with one of the Water Pic devices and warm salty water.

It does sound like an abscess...how old is the 'patient'? Sometimes baby teeth are really loose, and food gets caught under them. Is there a big filling in the tooth already?
Since there is no pain, and just mushy/swollen(perfect description, btw!!) have them rinse with very warm water(no salt) and go get a bottle of Glyoxide or Peroxyl(same stuff, 2 different brand names). Squirt some of it around the area, and it will help to 'bubble out' the stuff that's stuck in there. Popcorn is usually the culprit, if it's not an area that has previously had gum disease or a huge filling place. Advil every 4 hours will help relieve any discomfort and help reduce the swelling.
HTH!!!
