sometimes when knowledge is lost it cant be recovered and if it is it takes years of trial and error to be relearned.

Elk, you always find the most interesting videos to share. I was of the understanding that some Amish still harvest the ice. I looked at a place last year that had an ice room outside the home...impressive to me.

As for the Amish video, it lends credence to the issue of lost arts/skills. If you value your elders, continue doing what works without jumping on the latest and greatest, those arts/skills remain intact. Here I am at a ripe old age learning to can in a pressure cooker. Sad.

i found it interesting they said they lived slow enough life as to keep elderly able to participate in life.(not exact words but mine) when i see and read things like the thread in upper forum i want to die before 75 and all this healthcare stuff about spending money on unproductive seniors...to be honest i wanna puke....and i already witnessed some of this obama care stuff here locally with my buddies daddy who past this year and the things the hospital administration said and tried to do....i cant/wont talk about it here...but it was awful.

I am 59...from the time I was born, I remember my maternal great grandmother living in the upstairs bedroom of my grandparents ( she was bedridden ). Soon after she died, my grandmother discovered an elderly neighbor in similar situation and brought him to the room where he died a few years later. We just knew that is what you do.
When my paternal grandmother became bedridden, she came to live with me until her death in April at the age of 99. Though my mentally handicapped brother lives in a group home, he is home with me one full weekend a month. We are involved with the other men in his group home. I pray my children know, you take care of your own as much as possible...and that "your own" is not always blood related.
