I was just wondering...What are those prickly little dots on a cucumber when forming on the vine? This is the second time I've grown cukes. Are the dots simply like thorns, or do they serve some other purpose?

I have always thought of them to be like spines on a cactus. They keep the critters from eating them while they are young.

I don't know what they're for, perzackly... But they are kind of fun to knock off the cukes when you're picking them. If they keep the critters from eating them, that's great, but I wish they'd keep the bugs off more.

Which reminds me that I have to go sprinkle some more DE out there. Nasty cucumber beetles!
