I'm working on making quilted coasters for my mom for Christmas. Here's step one:

It was kind of a dare to myself, if that makes sense? I wanted to see if I could do it. I also have a 1" & 2" log cabin foundation pattern that I may try after I do 3 more of these pineapple blocks...

Also, my mom is my sewing enabler, so it should stand to reason that she ought to benefit from that at least once. She always gets me cool quilting stuff as gifts. She's given me quilting magazine subscriptions, a quilting frame (hoop style), plastic templates, books, fabric (yard sale finds!), and nifty spring-loaded scissors. We always find time to go to a fabric store of some type when we get together. This last trip, we went to a Hancock's, and we both spotted this beautiful holiday fabric at about the same time. I couldn't think of anything I needed it for, but she bought it for me for Christmas...then gave it to me for my birthday... <grin>

Finally, I figure I can do the teensy tiny patterns first & if I run out of time, I can do the folded "4-patch" coaster in another thread...

Wow, that's fabulous! Are you going to bind them or sew front and back right sides together and turn? That'd be my choice!

CJ, I think right sides together & turning would be easier, but I think binding would be prettier and be sturdier... Probably depends on how much time I have once the piecework is done... Of course, I could use some of the decorative stitches on my (newer) Janome to machine quilt some of the solid green diamonds (when the blocks go together) and use the easier construction. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Joy, that is really really cute, but it is soooo teensy tiny, it must take a lot of patience and some good glasses.

It is actually paper piecing, which is pretty easy, once you get the hang of it. If I had to cut out all those little pieces, I never would attempt it. I'll have to post a picture of the back side of the block.

that's a really small paper piecing.

Where did you find something that small? I guess that would really use up those "LITTLE" scraps of fabric.

I did a search for miniature quilt foundation piecing. I found a couple at a site recommended here, and some at this site: http://www.geocities.com/pcpiecers/freepatterns.html

I also found one on About.com for doll house quilts (a teeny log cabin).

Thanks for the link, I may have to go roaming around and see what I can get printed off to experiment with.

If you can do it, I should be able to get thru at least one to try it out.

I think I would go blind trying to work with peices that small. My RA wouldn't let me either. It's really nice.
