What exactly is a chop shop? A friend of my DH (thanksfully not a close friend) was arrested yesterday for running a chop shop. I know it has something to do with stolen cars, but he stealing them? You never seen so many cop cars in front of his house.

A chop shop is a garage that strips stolen cars to their component parts for sale. No he most likely wouldn't be stealing them. That's what kids are for or sometimes professional crime rings that specialize in stealing cars.

  3. A chop shop knowingly recieves stolen cars, pays a low rate for them, and cuts them apart (chops) to resell the individual components to other garages/ outlets as used parts. Alternators, starters, air bags, bumpers, fenders, whole engines - all that stuff has a good resale value as good used merchandise & is difficult to track down as 'stolen'.

The best cars for such an operation are not the big $$$ cars, but often GMC generic models that have a lot of common parts with each other & are easy to sell the parts off of because there are so many on the road, demand for used parts is high.

The owner probably does not physically steal the cars himself, but has a ring of kids that delivers stolen cars to the garage.
