A friend and I were discussing giving Ivermec monthly for heartworm preventative. I know you can not give this to Collies or their close relatives. Or to cats but that is another story.
Does anyone know if it is okay to give Ivermectin to an Austrailian Shepherd?
Thanks for the help...

I have treated cats with ivermectim with good results. I think if you will do a check to determine the contents of heartworm medicine for dogs you will find ivermectin as an ingredient. It all has to do with correct doseage. I would not give it to the collie/herding types however.

It's my understanding that you should NOT give it to Australian Shepherds.

Depending on what the problem is, there's good alternatives. For heartworm preventative, there's something with a really funny name --- something like ibelymycin ???  which is completely safe for Aussies.

NO, NO, NO! I've raised aussies for about 14 years now, and don't even let my dogs out into the pasture where sheep have pooped after worming the flock with ivermec. It is just as bad for them as it is for collies. There are alternatives for them, like interceptor. It's wonderful that you are looking into it in advance!

Thank you very much. I had a feeling that the Aussie was included in the "collie type" warning. I try to always check before medicating any of my critters and also check on any new meds for myself as I am allergic to many things.
Thank you again and have a great day!
