So, we have our Snubian ready to give birth in about two months or so and our five month old LaMancha will be ready to breed when she is about a year. So, my husband and I were talking about breeding her to a Boer????

What do you guys think? Would it make for a complicated birth? We wanted to breed with a Niggie in the beginning for the butterfat content of the milk but since our Snubian is already bred to a Nigerian we will most likely just keep on of her does (if she has one :) So, we decided to go the meat route with our LaMancha.

Anyone ever bred a Boer to a LaMancha before? I would love to hear about the experience. Thanks.

I've seen small fine boned LaManchas and big heavy LaManchas. Your answer partly depends on which type she is.

Also, I don't think I'd do this for her first pregnancy.

LaBoers are great meat goats. But with it being her first freshening, it would depend on two things for me. The type of doe she is(small-boned and fine, or sturdy and thick), and the type of kids the Boer buck throws.
With her being a year old at breeding, she should be able to handle it just fine......unless she is petite-built, or he throws huge kids.

Well I have a lady here in my local area who is willing to stud out her bucks. So, maybe I will go and look at her buck's size and the size of their kids before I breed to him. My doe is just a baby right now, five months old, but her mom and her dad were a really good size. She is, however smaller (shorter) than her sister was. But, I guess right now I couldn't actually tell because she has so much more growing to do.

You need to know the size of his kids at birth. Adult size or rate of gain on kids won't tell you much, since that is not a good indication of the kid size at birth. Most Boer breeders have at least a good estimate of the size kids each buck throws.

Okay, she actually sent me some pictures of some recent kids they just had. Maybe I will ask her how much they weighed at birth. Otherwise, since I do not want to put my LaMancha in a hard situation for her first birth, maybe we'll just ask her how much she will sell us a doeling for :) And breed her down the road.

I have to ask one question though: Do Boers tend to be more on the noisy side?

Sounds like a plan!:)

The answer to the above question is that it depended on the Boer in my herd. Some talked frequently, some were quiet as mice. On the whole, they were not a mouthy goat.
