Since it will go into gear and forward, we'll "assume" the linkage is connected.
Simple test: Shift the tranny into "1" if your shifter has this option. On many transmissions First and Reverse gears use the same bands, the only difference being the shift valve.
Obviously, if your shift selector doesn't have the "1" option, this simple test is useless.
The problem "could" be as simple as a shift valve being clogged by a piece of crud or the tranny needing a new filter ... but it "could" be as expensine as needing a replacement.
New tranny? Replacement that's been rebuilt? Rebuild the current one?
Shop around.
Check factory recall notices. It may be subject to being repaired under a recall ... even if the warranty is up.
(Had this happen on an '85 Ford and have heard of it being the case on other vehicles as well.)
