Blazer Tranny?

Mother-In-Law's 2002 Blazer won't go in reverse. It's parked in the garage right now and she can't get it out without pushing it. I checked the tranny fluid and it's nice and pink and full. I can put it in drive but it won't go in reverse, just sits there and revs. I put it in 4wd (push button on dash) and it does the same thing. She said the other day she came around a corner and she saw the RPMs go up but it seemed like she wasn't going any faster. Is there different linkage in the tranny for drive and reverse? She bought it used and naturally the warrenty is up! Will she need a new tranny or get this one rebuilt?

Since it will go into gear and forward, we'll "assume" the linkage is connected.

Simple test: Shift the tranny into "1" if your shifter has this option. On many transmissions First and Reverse gears use the same bands, the only difference being the shift valve.
Obviously, if your shift selector doesn't have the "1" option, this simple test is useless.

The problem "could" be as simple as a shift valve being clogged by a piece of crud or the tranny needing a new filter ... but it "could" be as expensine as needing a replacement.

New tranny? Replacement that's been rebuilt? Rebuild the current one?
Shop around.

Check factory recall notices. It may be subject to being repaired under a recall ... even if the warranty is up.
(Had this happen on an '85 Ford and have heard of it being the case on other vehicles as well.)
