Don't laugh tooo hard folks, the H5N1 virus CAN be on and live for up to 72 hours or longer on dry surfaces. and feathers usually are rampant with viruses - I do believe the US banned importation of any feather product from China mid to late summer for just that reason. The testing for viruses from live birds is pretty time consuming and expensive which is most probably why the Chinese government is slaughtering millions of poultry in the last month and burning the bodies of the birds. They have also been ordering the cremation of any human who dies of "suspected" H5N1 which is why W.H.O. has not been able to get adequate samples.
