The laptop known as the XO or previously the "$100 laptop" is now available via amazon.com:

You pay $400 (which is why it was previously known as the $100 laptop) and one of the latptops goes to a third world country school who needs it, the other to you. This thing is basically built for the off-grid community. You can power it by hand crank, solar power, hook it up to just about any raw electrical source (even an old car battery!) and it's nigh unbreakable, dust proof, and water resistant. Wi-fi is built in, it runs open source software on Linux so you can't get nasty spyware or accidentally download viruses and is pre-loaded with everything you need. They have gotten RAVE reviews for quality and usage. Note, this isn't something you can use to play games on or make movies, but it will do some video and has a built in web camera. It has 3 USB ports so if you want extra stuff that's where you hook it up (like DVD players or extra hard drives) because it does not contain any drives to begin with (part of it's ruggedness).

I suggest giving it a try :)
