A dicussion about banding was had among fellow sheep producers, answers were all across the board...How old is too old to use an elastrator to band a ram lamb? at what age do you consider it inhumane?

If it's difficult to put on, the ram is too big to be banded. Not sure age is all that good a measure. The idea is to stop all blood flow so size is very important if the band can't do it's job.

Everything Ive read about it says NOT to band them after a couple of months. Its recommended that it be done surgically if they are older. The problem I ran into was the band wouldnt go on after about 2 months. Ive seen them done older with no ill effects but a cattle bander had to be used

I have found the use of a calf size Burdizzo, a much better method for castration in lambs (about a month or older).

If you can't get it on, they are too old. But thats just me.

Thank you for your reply's...what started the conversation was a Vet telling the 4H children that banding a lamb or goat kids after 3 weeks was innapropriate and inhumane and trusted they wouldn't do it again...that started a conversation among producers that were along what you all have said.

adjustabel banders use a rubber tube that can be tightened to fit any size.
