Put in a new asparagus bed this year. Things have gotten out of hand and the bed is overrun with weeds. I know this is not good. How do I get it back on track? Ideally I would hand weed the whole thing then mulch. But it probably isn't going to happen. My question is can a mow it and go from there? The ferns are done forming. Lisa

The ferns are feeding the roots. Keep letting the ferns grow until they turn brown and die back. Then cut the dry stalks (asparagus beetles overwinter in the hollow stalks). Then pull any remaining weeds (most will have died from the cold) and mulch the heck out of it.
