Massive Sinkhole Still Growing - Ohio: 4 Football Fields Long, 30' Deep Shuts Down 8 Mile Stretch Of Road | Earthquakes

Lots of sink holes have been showing up along the New Madrid fault line. Some "experts" are speculating that this could be a warning that a big quake will hit soon.

That hole in Louisiana that 'burped' is a little disconcerting...

I do not have a football jock mentality, so how long is a football field?

I really wish people would stop using football fields as a comparison for the size of other things. It's really annoying and incredibly ignorant. Talk about dumbing people down! Why can't they just tell the actual length of the darned thing in feet or yards or meters or miles or whatever is a proper measurement? So much easier to visualize the length of something when it's described in proper measurements.

    :grit:

Sorry about the sinkhole. I hope it doesn't get bigger.

Football is KING in Ohio. Hence the analogy.
Well,, football is king in pretty much all the lower 48.

A football field is 100 yards plus the endzones.

:thumb: Football is also a big event for most of us Canadians too, and our playing fields are 110 yards.

I don't understand why they closed 8 miles of highway when the length of the sinkhole was about 1/4 of a mile, and it looked like it just took out a bit of the road...nice clean break though!

I read another article there too and I wonder if these are caused by the "slow-slip" events?

This is not far from where I live.
There is some fracking going on in that area, I think.

    Curious.
One article said that folks were 'getting' sick around one of the sink holes.

    What made them sick?
What did the earth 'burp' that makes people sick?
Isn't the air after a volcanic eruption thick with a poisonous gas?

Are these sink holes in places where landfills were covered and housing additions were built on top?

Are there any reports of sizemic (sp) activity prior to the sink hole appearing?

I didn't realize the New Madrid fault zone went so far north. Dover, Ohio is west of Pittsburgh.

??? Really?? I'll have to do some searching on that as it's not on any of the local new stations or in the papers (WTOV is out of Stubenville which is in the area....but doesn't broadcast much further then Dover...so we don't get it - nor does my FIL who lives down in that region). Hubby is there deer hunting right now (we live about 30 min away for the area). He grew up in Dover. Too bad the station isn't giving any details as to where this is....you'd think that might be important information to put out there???

ETA: Found more info. Looks like it was "man made". The sand/gravel company was digging and everything started sliding leaving a hole in 516. That may be why it's not being covered much...."man made". We were just looking online at the property within sight of that gravel company a few months ago....glad we didn't look into it any deeper and buy it!!!

Because to many people, 300 ft, or 100 yds is just a number, but they can PICTURE a "football field" is a distance they can visualize

Sorry, but I think that's a lame reason and being reported that way by the media is very poor journalism. And like I said before, it's dumbing people down, it's not aiding people with lazy brains who would be better off exercising their brains.

If a person is a football enthusiast then they'll already know that a football field is approximately 300 feet long, so they can visualize the image of the field or they can visualize 300 feet, whichever is easiest for them.

Somebody who is not a football enthusiast or knows nothing about it cannot be expected to know that a football field is approximately 300 feet long. So when they're told something is the size of a football field that information is utterly meaningless to them, they have absolutely no numbers of measurement to work with nor an image of a football field to visualize. That person should not be required to investigate the size of a football field in order to determine the size of something else when ideally the news report should be stating the exact measurement and size of the thing and not comparing it with something else.

Sorry, naturelover, I have to disagree.

Maybe it's an American thing, but even my kids that don't follow football have a reasonable idea of how long a football field is. There is one or two (or more) in every town, here. Every kids that's gone to public school in the US and likely at least 1/2 of the private schools, have an intimate knowledge of football fields.

I agree with you - pert near every town in the USA has at least one football field. Highschool, college etc... Many have a quarter mile track around them that the locals use for exercise in off hours.

It is a perfectly logical visual description of the size of the hole.

The sinkhole in Louisiana has now swallowed up 8 acres of land, and is emitting poisonous hydrogen sulphide, and people have re-evacuated for about 2 miles around this area. It started around Bayou Corme.

I'm just reading this thread because I hope we have another few posts about football fields and their validity of measurement. I hope they are angry insulting posts too!

I dearly love NL and she knows it but to be honest those Canucks with all their decimal confoundment have been driving me batty for a long time. No, I don't no what 10 degrees Celsius is off the top of my head but Google is my friend. 50 sounds much better to me.
