alcohol/ethanhol to power a generator or pumps

does any one have any experience with this? i was thinking that making fuel for a car or even a motorbike or atv might be a bit of a streach but to make enough for a generator for light duty or for pumps to fill a cistern or empty a basement might be possible. so who has some input on this one.
