Use a one wire GM alternator, change the bulbs to 12 volt, and put in the 12 volt battery (negative ground), the starter should turn the correct direction even if it was positive ground, (run the 6 volt starter until it goes out and replace it then)
This is how I did it on my MM U tractor that was 6 volt,
(I did have to make a new mount for the alternator and use the pulley that was on the generator on the alternator, as it was a "B" size belt).
