I talked to the foundation guy today and he said that he may either use 8" blocks or 10" blocks depending on the site. He has seen it once before. Is there a big difference between the 8" and 10" conc blocks other than size? Thanks Chris

Here in NC you can only get cinder/concrete blocks in either 8" or 12". Are you building a basement? If so the codes probably specify 12" below grade with strong wall(wire reinforcement-horizontally laid every two or three layers) and 8" above. If only a crawl space I would only use 8" with 4" pillars @ every 6-8 feet along the outer wall. Is it a single story frame, brick, stucco, what? Two story? Need more info to give accurate advice. Normally an 8" foundation w/piers is more than sufficent to support any average home. Are you required to insulate to grade? Gideon

Hi Gideon, it's a two storey wood frame home, with a crawlspace and yes have to insulate to grade.

Confossi, Just noticed you are from Ontario. Do not know what codes you have there but an 8" with pillars should be sufficent. We move houses and so I see masonary work nearly daily as we lower houses onto the foundations. Normally pillars over 40" tall need to be double stacked(16X16) and some areas/counties/cities require cement coating also("Surewall"). Getting your footings below the frost line should be your major concern. If not you will always be getting cracks due to upheaval. Hope all goes well.

We just built a house in Ontario, with a walkout basement. The code will tell him what he has to use, we actually had to use 12" blocks for part of the wall and 8" for the rest. If they're all going to be buried it doesn't make a big difference as long as it's up to code.
