Hi.
Starting this early due to something being a hiccup on this site for me.
I do this on a computer, and not a smart phone.
I am using chrome right now. IE won't let me start a conversation.
Chrome has a hiccup for me
Homesteading Today is in HUGE letters across the top of my screen.

I save our cat litter jugs, generally the 14# jugs, poke several drainage holes in them and bury them a couple inches next to plants in the garden. Take off the lid, fill with water, put lid back on. Seems to work for me to water more quickly by hand, make sure the water gets down under the soil level. Grandkids like watering that way too. Pretty easy to add a bit of water soluble fertilizer into the jug and allow the water to seep out. If I can't bury them a bit due to more mature plant roots, I drive a short piece of rebar through the opening, into the ground to stabilize the jug.

With warm weather coming on quickly, it's time to do your early air conditioner and fan maintenance. Make sure the power is off and/or the unit is unplugged before doing a good cleaning. Wipe down fan blades and clean the dust off the outer cage. Clean air conditioner filters or follow the instructions for cleaning that are in your owners manual. Check to see if any portable fans still work. If you need to buy new fans, get them early in the season when stores have a good selection.

Check your winter outerwear for tears, broken zippers, missing buttons and make any necessary repairs before washing the garment and storing it for the season. If you store winter clothing in boxes, use plastic storage totes that are closed to prevent mice from getting inside. Hubby lost a good pair of Arctic weather coveralls because he didn't make sure the storage tote was closed! Make a list of items that need to be replaced and keep it handy so you can take advantage of those early autumn sales.

If you use space heaters, clean them before storing them for the season.

While it's still too damp and chilly to work in the garden is the best time to go over your garden tools and do any maintenance that didn't get done in the fall. Most stores have already stocked garden tools and supplies on their shelves. Some big box stores get a limited supply of garden tools and accessories. Now is the time to buy items like hose connectors, sprayers, hand tools, etc. that will be needed soon. If you like to gamble you can wait until after July 4th and hope the stores still have stock that is put on clearance.

Well the phone saga continues.
Last phone the moto g went back this morning. The phone was calling people
on it's own. Not in my pocket either. When it worked it was good, when not working....not working.
Got a straight talk phone and the tech at Walmart, redid it over so it could accept tracfone service.
It is a Samsung smart phone and so far I like it. I got minutes to use up, lots of them. so had
to stay with tracfone. Time will tell. Feeling more positive about this one.

Just trying to keep the budget super tight, till we get the dog's surgery over with later this month.

Weather has been on the cold side here. Lots of rainy days. Flowers are looking pretty.
I think spring might be finally here :)

I didn’t know where else to post this, so maybe here. Just a tip if you buy off of EBay.

I purchase off of EBay probably once a week. Items I can’t find locally or if I need a cheaper price for example. One thing I’ve noticed in the last year or so is to pay attention to where your seller is shipping from. I live in the upper Midwest. EVERY time I buy something from a seller in NY or NJ, or on the West coast, CA OR , or WA , it adds an average of a WEEK to the shipping.
Obviously, the closer the seller, the less time it will take, but this goes beyond that. I look at the tracking, and for some reason after an item is shipped, it always seems to drag it’s feet in those states. Anything else makes quick progress and keeps moving. This hashappened enough where I know I’m not imagining it. I absolutely refuse to buy from those states, unless it’s an item that I absolutely don’t care when it arrives. FWIW

Went to a local dollar store ( 1.25) today. Display up front,
they had mystery boxes for sale. Different sizes . $ 1.25 each.
I got one. Told the cashier I needed some cheap stuff because I
set up a table for door prizes at a meet that I do.
He had a shopping cart up front about half full of misc stuff and let me make
up my own box full. So paid for the 2 boxes and went out to my truck.
The one I chose not knowing what was in it, was mostly Easter type stuff.
Came back in store with the 2 the boxes empty and asked if I could fill
them again. So bigger box got the bigger stuff and smaller box got the
small stuff. I did empty his cart. Even got some stuff for my household.
Then he told me that the store was closing in November, because of the owner
retiring and none of his kids wanted the business. Guess I need to get stocked
up between now and their closing.

Still getting used to my new phone. So far I have accidently put in on a Do not disturb mode.
No wonder no calls were coming in. Yesterday or day before I managed to accidently MUTE
calls coming in. Going out was fine. Have came to conclusion I have a sensitive screen and
I have to be careful how I put it in my pocket. I face it out. And have to put the bottom edge in
first. So when I grab it, I am not accidently swiping and unlocking it. A lot better phone than
the last few I was arguing with. I do own a second smart older phone and I don't remember
any issues like this with that one. But it is a smaller one so maybe that is why.
One feature I like on this one I accidently stumbled onto.
I was at the thrift store, found a item I thought the son could use. So I sent a pic of it
in messenger to him before I bought it. So I figured out, if I open messenger , go to
person I want to sent it to, touch pic icon, then take pic, it automatically inserts the pic. :)

I've been reading about your trials with phones for the last while and sincerely hope that everything is resolved now.
I've set my phone to mute without knowing it more than once or ten times too. I've also turned the volume down too much without realizing it either. I do have a Otterbox cover on mine now which has helped. It's not a full cover;it just surrounds the sides and back of the phone and has a lip that protects the camera and face screen a bit. That helped me stop "muting" without knowing it.

As far as frugal. I helped friends pack for their move out of country. We live in the same condo building and I'll miss them. What I did end up with, unasked and completely unexpectedly, was a wooden apple picking basket, over 60 years old, that I've admired for years. I'm so pleased and touched. They are also people who often buy just a wee bit too much sometimes. I got a set of sheets, still in bag, a load of canned goods with expiry date for 2024, and a bright red toolbox. I've always joked that I wanted a red toolbox for my rather small collection of tools. Well now I have one.(they had three when they combined households). They gave me more too, which I'll move along to one of my sisters who works with people in need. The same sister will get some of the canned goods too. We also took a lot to the Salvation Army. I didn't help to get "stuff", but I surely did appreciate what they gave me - especially the apple basket which really was a gift.

Hubby was telling someone the other day about the old computers that took up a whole room and could run only a simple program and now we can access all the knowledge of the world with something that fits in a pocket. It amazes me when I think about it.

I have been giving the rabbits fresh greens from the yard and garden. Free for the picking and much better for them. Granted their one container of leaf lettuce and bunch of parsley a week wasn't expensive, but we are down to one car and hubby is back to work so lettuce and parsley runs would require special trips to town.

A lady posted a item in a face book group I belong to.
New in box, and pricey.
Was up for like 30 minutes. She wanted to give it away to a person
who needed it. Said PM and state your case why you need it.
So I did. ( it is a item I will be using every day )
I should have it in about 10 days. I should not be bragging
about it, as I don't have it yet, but pretty sure it will be mine.
The lady knows me. I have bought stuff from her recently.

My chickens and ducks have a big enclosed run with roof now. No more free ranging.
This morning, I picked them a big armful of grass and put it in the run before I opened
the chicken door to let them out. Yesterday I picked dandelions leaves for the bunnies.
Free food is a good thing :)

I remember those computers! In 1979 I had to take a rudimentary computer programming class in university. We had to type out each line of code on a separate punch card then take the stack, kept securely in a shoebox to the big and noisy computer room and see what happened when you loaded the cards into the machine. One card out of place could send you (me) into the dreaded endless loop. The computer programming students nearly lost their eyesight from rolling their eyes at our efforts.

I was taking a librarians program and our computer skills teacher said we'd all be out of work in ten years. He was wrong. :) About two years later that school updated completely in partnership with a corporation and newer students didn't have to do coding that way again. Hello dialup modems and online databases. Yes, it is remarkable what we can get from our phones now, and so fast!

I still have one of those computer punch cards.

Saving electricity and time by putting hatchery chicks under a broody banty hen.

Yes, I could have saved money by using the eggs we have here, but I wanted this particular breed.

My uncle worked as a punch card programmer for years! He brought home some of the punch cards for his family to use as scrap paper. I thought they were pretty neat.

Not too much exciting going on here.
Dog has surgery coming up soon and been keeping a super tight budget.
I refuse to get a credit card to pay any bill with.
Just will have to go without some things for awhile.

Got a group of chicks from my bantams , hatched in a incubator.
So those are using a heat lamp.
Using a different baby grain than what I was getting from TSC.
NO pasty butt of any kind. And they are growing great.
Have not bought any grain from TSC since end of January.
Have eggs under bantams due soon, and those babies will get a hen
to take care of them.

Garden is going in but still holding off on some things. Got a frost last
night. I got garlic, huge plants that I put in last fall. It is in a different raised
bed so seeing a difference. I got a water tank close by to water from.
Hubby has put in peas, and sweet corn so far. He also got some pumpkin
seeds. His stuff all goes in on a regular flat plot next to my raised beds.
I told him to hill the pumpkins and to use some bunny poo.
I got to get in some sunflowers soon.

Been getting some of my groceries at Walmart because of other things I need.
Went into Aldi's yesterday finally and some things I wanted were not on the shelves.
And the prices had gone up on some things I usually buy. Sigh.
And other half aka Mr Grumpy had complained a LOT the day before of what
food was in the frig. He will cook a big package of meat and then proceed to
snack on the rest of it. I been buying smaller packages. I had to remind him
there was potatoes and lots of veggies in the house, so make a real meal and
not just pig out on meat alone on his plate. Yesterday I told him things are not going to get
better for food selection and he best get used to it. I am running out of ideas.

I know a while back there were many postings about the price of eggs and how high the price went to.
Well, today I was in Walmart and bought a dozen of x-large eggs and was floored that I only paid $1.38 for the 12..

This may be a “captain obvious “ post, but…..
Big festival going on in my town today-Morel Mushroom festival. Anyway tradition is there’s also a lot of garage sales. I picked up lots of small items I know I’ll use in the future. I bought a box of various sized masonry drill bits, maybe 30 in all, brand new-$10. Lots more metal and wood bits too, just an example. I don’t buy junk, or things that are priced good, but I don’t think I’ll need, or it just becomes clutter.
