This has been a slowly getting worse problem for almost 1.5 years. when I start the car and excelerate it wants to try to quit.you have to feather the throttle. My first thought was fuel filter. It does not have one has a screen in tank as part of pump. I replaced plugs and wires. put lucas oil fuel treatment, carb injector cleaner. could it be timing belt. Currently has 141,000 miles.same engine as carrola thanks Mike

When did you last replace the timing belt? Usually should be done around every 60,000 miles or so. It is possible that it could have lost a cog or tooth on the belt or skipped a tooth and so the valve timing would be off--but not very likely. You could check the valve timing but it is almost as easy to replace the belt if it hasn't been replaced. I am always suspicious of maintenance free items, such as the fuel filter in the tank, that "never" need to be serviced.

There are a lot of things it could be. Stick with beeman's suggestions, he knows his stuff.

My first thought was a clogged catylitic converter.
