when i went to start it this morning all i got was a loud tat-tat-tat-tat. is there anything besides the starter that could cause this. also does anyone know where i could find drawings of the engine?

The first two things to check would be battery condition and all cable connections for tightness and dirt/corrosion - they're the most common problems with any starting system.

    Drawings of the engine?
The best bet would be a service manual (like Chilton's or Motor's). I don't know any good online sources.

A metalic clicking in rapid sequence indicates either a low battery or failed solonide, just trace the hot wire from the battery to find it. With the key on, jump the two large lugs with a large wire, if it responds and starts, replace the solonide (wish I could spell).

Is the battery charged and in good shape? If it's still on the original battery, it's probably about time for a new one.

the other thing , it could be brushes , the starter solenoid picks up its earth via the earth brush inside the starter .
