It's raining again in SC, yesterday and last night. The area is having lots of rain with more threatening coming off the Gulf of Mexico. About 40 miles from here a major highway climbs the NC mountains. The so called Saluda Grade is a very steep, curvy road, probably not as steep as the famous Wolf Creek pass in one of the Western states, but I have never seen it. This grade was improved with occasional passing lanes, then in the early 70s they built I 26 on the other side of the mountain, which was troublesome due to land slides and other problems. They put a bridge across the Green River(no, not the Green River in WY) which is the highest bridge in the East. It is 300 feet high and large trees look like toothpicks when looking down from the bridge.
Anyway, at the foot of the Saluda Grade tnere is a very nice restaurant. It is on the side of what is at that point a small river which is crossed by a small private bridge. In the late 70s that stream flooded and washed out the bridge, which was rebuilt at considerable expense. Last week heavy rains caused the stream to flood, but not enough to wash out the bridge. However, since the late 70s there has been some home building on the mountain side and I suspect there was enough flooding to cause landslides, washing out some homes causing one fatality. 60 people were stranded in the restaurant over night since the stream overflowed its banks downstream, and the road up the mountain was blocked by landslides. Lots of damage, the locals would like a Federal disaster declaration
It has been too wet for a long time to plant my small garden, also my garden tiller was broke down. I managed to get it repaired, the garden plowed, and corn, beans and okra planted just before it rained. Hope it does well.
